The East of England Adult Critical Care Network has partnered with Mela Solutions and Peterborough City Hospital to build a shared analytics platform covering every adult critical care unit in the region. The early results are already telling a story.

About the Project

The East of England Adult Critical Care Network has launched a Network Analytics Project with Mela Solutions to gain deeper, data-driven insights into demand, capacity, patient case mix and patient flow across adult critical care services in the region. Through advanced analytics, the collaboration aims to support better-informed decision making, improve system coordination, identify areas for improvement and ultimately enhance outcomes for critically ill patients across the network.

Partnership with Peterborough City Hospital

To support the initiative, the Network has engaged with Adult Critical Care Services and the Information Management and Technology Department at Peterborough City Hospital. The hospital has been instrumental in championing the project and serves as the host organisation responsible for storing and processing Medicus adult critical care data on their analytics platform. The team at Peterborough City Hospital has provided invaluable support in enabling data feeds and ensuring a smooth implementation process.

Benefits for Critical Care Units Across the Region

This collaboration between the Network, Mela Solutions and Peterborough City Hospital is benefiting all adult critical care units across the East of England. Through real-time dashboards, clinicians can now capture and analyse critical care data more efficiently, with improved clinical data capture, reporting and the ability to identify patterns and highlight opportunities to improve patient outcomes.

To date, the platform holds data on over 220,000 admissions and more than 1.2 million assessment days, giving the Network a rich, longitudinal view of critical care activity across the region.

ICNARC Performance Indicators and Data Analysis

The Network is able to highlight key ICNARC (Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre) performance indicators and quickly filter and compare data by different date ranges and patient demographics.

ICNARC performance indicators

This interactivity means the Network can investigate the reasons behind a unit appearing as an outlier within the data, supporting more targeted and evidence-based improvement work.

Real-time dashboard with granular data analysis

This has already highlighted a significant improvement in admission delay from 2024 to 2025.

Looking Ahead

The Network thanks the teams at Peterborough City Hospital and Mela Solutions for their leadership in getting this project off the ground. By combining regional clinical expertise with advanced digital tools, the collaboration is helping hospitals and the Network to deliver safer, smarter and more connected critical care for patients across the region.

Working alongside partners and all adult critical care units, the Network recognises this as a meaningful step forward in how data is used to support critical care. The Network Analytics Project is building a stronger evidence base to guide clinical and operational decisions, while facilitating cross-organisation communication and shared learning.
